Trashy Business

Sometimes, whilst surfing online, I save an article which I may want to write about in the future. In May of this year, I downloaded this report from the The Star Online. It was basically a report on the 2nd phase of the recycling campaign that the Malaysian government was going to launch. Apparantly, it was launched in June of this year... somehow, I doubt that very much as I haven't seen / heard anything about the campaign. In the article (which you can read here), the Housing and Local Government Minister, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting stated that 80% of the 230 landfills in the country would have to be closed in the next two years as they could no longer sustain the 15,000 tonnes of rubbish that we, Malaysians churn out each day. He went on to say that we throw out things without hesitation. I remember reading somewhere (I can't recollect where now) that the rubbish that we throw away each day can fill the Petronas Twin Towers on a daily basis. Now that is a lot of rubbish!!

Then, on Monday, I received the following email:

"Hi All
Please read carefully in you staying in KL, and shows your support, by forwarding email to someone you know who staying in KL.

Dear friends,
The Housing and Local Government Ministry is planning to build an incinerator for waste management in an area which will affect many of us soon.

You may check it out from the web site- www.no-incinerator.com whether your resident area is also affected by the project.

Please hurry!
The mega incinerator will be built near Bukit Jalil, besides Kesas Highway. According to resources, it will be the biggest in Asia of type.

This type of incinerators were shut down in northern America and European countries years ago, due to unforeseen environmental and health problems like cancer.

The affected areas are of 7.5km radius of the incinerator, which include Sunway, Petaling Jaya, Bukit Gasing, Kampung Pantai Dalam, Bukit Jalil, Sri Petaling, Old Klang Road,OUG, Puchong, Bandar Kinrara, Seri Kembangan etc.

Please check out the website for detail:
http://www.no-incinerator.com
Study the material and decide for yourself if you need to support this petition, as an expression of your social concern.

This project (refer mail below) may or may not affect you - however please do pass it on EVERYONE YOU KNOW who may or may not be affected by it (for they may have love ones residing in the areas affected.

Please sign up the petition form if you disagree with the incinerator! Do it before too late because they are clearing the site for construction now!!!"

[sidebar] Ok. I am going to be a little bitchy right now. The above email is a direct cut and paste from the one I received, minus the identity of the sender and the originator of the message. I couldn't be bothered to correct the obvious grammatical errors but it originated from a news reporter for a prominent English newspaper. Makes one wonder about the level of English in this country doesn't it??

Anyways, moving on. I am not going to write about the obvious hazards of having the MEGA incinerator located so close to populated areas. That is blatant stupidity if you ask me. You can read all about the location, the hazards, and SIGN THE PETITION FORM at the http://www.no-incinerator.com website.
